March 21: Back in the Sierras

After spending Jan 2007 mostly getting ready to leave for the road and then Feb 2007 in Thailand doing not much except beach, drink, and eat... well, we were out of shape. So what better way to get in shape ...than to climb the highest mountain in the lower 48's! Mt. Whitney at 14,494' via the Mountaineer's Route in superb alpine conditions.

We took our time to get up to Iceberg Lake at some 12,000'. Night 1 at Lower Boy Scout Lake at some 10,000' (trailhead at 8400'); Night 2 at Iceberg Lake. Here's the alpine glow of Mt. Whitney at dawn from Iceberg Lake.

Video of Mt. Whitney at camp at Iceberg Lake.

Here's Christi ...fresh and full of energy and ready to go up. (She sounded pretty groggy in the video above, huh? hehehe)

Here's a video of Christi higher up on the Mountaineer's Route near the notch/saddle.

At the top... 14,494'.

After coming off the mountain, we camped at the Lone Pine Campground. During this time of the year, there's no Camp Host... and so it's free. The camp is awesome. A total "room with a view." Hopefully you'll see what I'm talking about from the video...
